Black role models are often sportsmen, rappers or actors. Successful black inventors and scientists are less widely known. This has to change, according to the Amsterdam-based National Institute for the Study of Dutch Slavery and its Legacy, NiNsee for short.

So on Saturday, 12 February, NiNsee opened an exhibition aptly called Black Role Models. One of the highlights is the US-Surinamese inventor Jan Matzeliger, born in Suriname in 1852. The son of a slave and a German engineer, he left for North America when he was 19.
