Liberian Opposition Party Expels Leader

Senator Prince Johnson says he will not dignify his alleged expulsion because the matter is before the elections commission of Liberia

The Executive Committee of the Liberian opposition National Union for Democratic Progress (NUDP) party announced it has expelled Senator Prince Y. Johnson as the political leader and member of the party.

Johnson is accused, among other things, of unilaterally declaring his support for President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in the runoff of the 2011 presidential election without the consent of the party’s National Executive Committee.

Gbawou Kowou, chairman of the National Union for Democratic Progress Party, said the party views some of Johnson’s actions as criminal.

Liberia land deals with foreign firms 'could sow seeds of conflict'

Small farmers lose livelihoods as 'controversial' palm-oil producing multinational moves in, report says

Pa Sando, the town chief of Konja, in Grand Cape Mount county in Liberia, looks out across the farmland. "I used to pick cocoa on this farm for more than 30 years. My grandfather planted it for us," he says. "All this area here was mine, and now it's all gone."

The land has been leased by Sime Darby Plantation (Liberia) Inc, owned by the Malaysian-based multinational Sime Darby, to grow trees for palm oil. Sando said he was never asked whether he wanted to give up his land – only that he saw the bulldozers in the bush and then his land was taken.

Much of rural Liberia's population lives on land that has been in the family for generations. Most people don't have the money to go through the costly and complicated process of acquiring deeds, so under Liberian law the government is the owner of all public land. Sando's land was not registered, therefore it belonged to the government.

Who’ll emulate Liberia’s George Weah?
Football fans who are familiar with the career of George Weah will always remember a story of the former world footballer of the year.

That he coached and single-handedly financed the Liberian national team, The Lone Star, in its unsuccessful bid to qualify for the 2002 Fifa World Cup.

Weah, the best footballer never to have featured in a World Cup, just fell short in qualifying by a single point. He was playing, coaching and financing the team’s travel, and accommodation.

Few players have the wherewithal to undertake such an expensive and daring investment, which even national federations occasionally find challenging.

Liberia considers jailing homosexuals
MONROVIA, Liberia – Two new bills introduced into Liberia's legislature would make the country the latest on the African continent to punish homosexuality with possible jail time.

Liberian law currently does not explicitly address homosexuality. "Voluntary sodomy" is a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison, but there have been no recent convictions, according to the most recent U.S. State Department Human Rights Report.

A bill introduced by Rep. Clarence Massaquoi, which is currently being reviewed in committee, makes "same-sex sexual practices" a second-degree felony, punishable by up to five years imprisonment.
Charles Taylor had US spy agency ties

Taylor tied bed sheets together to escape from a second-floor window at the Plymouth House of Correction on Sept. 15, 1985, he was more than a fugitive trying to avoid extradition. He was a sought-after source for American intelligence.

After a quarter-century of silence, the US government has confirmed what has long been rumored: Taylor, who would become president of Liberia and the first African leader tried for war crimes, worked with US spy agencies during his rise as one of the world’s most notorious dictators.

The disclosure on the former president comes in response to a request filed by the Globe six years ago under the Freedom of Information Act. The Defense Intelligence Agency, the Pentagon’s spy arm, confirmed its agents and CIA agents worked with Taylor beginning in the early 1980s.
African elected ICC chief prosecutor

International Criminal Court (ICC) has elected Fatou Bensouda the tribunal's chief prosecutor after facing fierce criticism from the African Union for mainly targeting African politicians.

Bensouda, a former justice minister in Gambia and currently the ICC's deputy prosecutor, was unanimously elected to the post by 120 member states of the Assembly of States Parties during the tribunal's annual meeting in the UN headquarters, AFP reported on Monday.

A holder of a master's degree in international maritime law, Bensouda will take over next June from Luis Moreno-Ocampo to serve a nine-year-long term.

Bensouda, a 50-year-old lawyer, has been a Deputy Prosecutor in charge of the Prosecutions Division of the ICC since 2004.
